Ex-Goochlander Thompson grabs acting opportunity
The leap from dancing with the Richmond Ballet to fighting for her life during an alien invasion in the upcoming movie "Skyline" isn’t lost on Scottie Thompson, who was raised in Goochland County.
The 28-year-old, who grew up at the historic Tuckahoe Plantation, graduated from Collegiate School and spent a year as an apprentice with the Richmond Ballet still seems surprised by the doors that have opened for her.
"Skyline," a Relativity Media and Universal production, premiered last week for Richmond audiences at Movieland. It’s a sci-fi, special-effects thriller that puts Thompson in Los Angeles during an otherworldly invasion. Her co-stars include Donald Faison, Eric Balfour, David Zayas and Brittany Daniel.
It’s Thompson’s first film, the latest chapter in a life that’s taken her from ballet slippers to the theater stage to television and finally, the big screen.
On a recent morning, Thompson talked about her life and goals over coffee and water. She was home for a short time while wrapping up work on her second film, "Lake Effects," scheduled to be released next year. Parts of the film were shot at Smith Mountain Lake.
Thompson said she grew up thinking she’d be a dancer. She started at age 10 and continued throughout high school. After graduating, she put Harvard on hold so she could work with the Richmond Ballet.
"I deferred a year with the idea that I might never go," Thompson said. But during that year off, "I just felt something else calling, so I set off to school to be a regular student."
Thompson majored in comparative literature and performance studies. During her first year she participated in a freshman arts program and found a new love in theater.
Plus one more here with Scottie and co-star Eric Balfour.
Eric Balfour (Jarrod), Scottie Thompson (Elaine) and Donald Faison (Terry) talk about their characters and what being part of the film means to them.
Scottie Thompson Online would like to wish Scottie a very happy 29th birthday!

Vulcan died for Scottie Thompson – sort of. In Star Trek (2009), Nero (Eric Bana) sought vengeance against Spock (Leonard Nimoy/Zachary Quinto) – and ultimately destroyed the Vulcan’s home world — because he blamed Spock for the death of his beloved, pregnant wife. Thompson played the unnamed spouse in a brief but pivotal Nero-Kirk (Chris Pine) sequence in which she appeared as a holographic image that Nero showed to Pike (Bruce Greenwood); the character did have a name, Mandana, in the comic book Star Trek: Countdown.
The actress, who hails from Virginia, count among her credits several episodes of Brotherhood, a recurring role on NCIS, a regular stint as Diana on Trauma, and her latest project, the sci-fi film Skyline. StarTrek.com caught up with Thompson on the Skyline promotional trail and chatted with her about the November 12 release, as well as Star Trek, additional films on the way and her career in general.
Your role in Star Trek was small but important. How did it come about?
Thompson: I just went in and I knew that (the character) hadn’t seen Nero in a while and I got to be in my own little Romulan land. It was so funny when I got the job. I said to the producer, “I just want to thank you because I’ve gone through my whole life identifying myself over the phone for restaurant reservations, saying ‘Scottie Thompson.’ And they’d say, ‘Dottie?’ And I’d say, ‘Scotty; like beam me up.’ So when I found out they were doing Star Trek I was like, “I have to be in this movie. I don’t care what my role is.’ ” The producer was like, “You have an alien look to you,” and he meant it in a good way, like otherworldly. So I guess it was meant to be.
